Hiring a handyman to make repairs to your house, or a mechanic to fix your car – professionals can be helpful, but they don’t come cheap. Same goes with fixing your credit. You can pay a company to fix up your credit history…but expect to pay a bundle.
“Our average client ends up paying 5 to 800 dollars to do a basic credit repair,” said Mathew Sheldon of Credit Heaven.
But even if you don’t know a hammer from a saw, this is one type of repair you can definitely do yourself. First step? Get a copy of your credit history.
You do this by visiting AnnualCreditReport.com. Each of the three consumer reporting agencies are required by law to give you a copy of your report every 12-months at no cost. So you can get all three at once, or one from each company every few months.
When you get yours, take a look. If you see something that’s inaccurate, from your name to any of the credit accounts, dispute it online or with a letter.
And look for stuff that’s old. Most negative marks have to fall off your credit history 7 years – 10 years for bankruptcies.
What about bad marks that are accurate? You can contact the company that put that bad mark there and ask to have them removed. Sometimes it will work, especially if you’re a current customer. So try that.
Finally, you can also add a 100 word explanation for each bad mark on your credit history. It doesn’t help a lot, but it’s better than nothing.
Mystery solved! You’ve just outsmarted the credit repair industry with three simple steps. If you insist on hiring someone, be really careful.
